Extremely rare Broadwood cabinet piano from c.1834, recently restored, restrung and in playable condition
Broadwood cabinet pianos are very rare, and found in museum collections worldwide. An almost identical example is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and similar examples are found in the Russell Collection and others
Even rarer are examples in playable condition. This piano was extensively restored in the last few years, including replacement of all strings, action felts, regulation and more. It can be tuned (though the tuning is naturally not as stable as a modern iron framed instrument, more in line with that of a harpsichord) and played, with a sweet sonorous tone
This piano comes with a large folder of research undertaken by the previous owner, and detailed photographs of the restoration. The strings were custom made from special gauges and bespoke metallurgy as the correct strings were no longer available. Spare string wire of different gauges is also included, along with a large bag of other spares
The casework is in very good condition overall, with beautiful deep varnish, and just some small veneer chips and splits in line with age
A rare opportunity for an early music enthusiast to acquire a genuine antique and a usable instrument for their collection
